Sewn to the Sky – Limo Hair, Sophie de Serière, Maria Blaisse
Sunday 15th June 2025
Location: Studio Maria Blaisse
In this workshop, participants gathered to make their own kites using bamboo and leftover silks. They crafted, adorned, and animated their kites, guided by the expertise of Limo Hair and Sophie de Serière, and hosted in the studio of Maria Blaisse.
Kites have special and complicated traditions as they’ve had different uses throughout time. Silk and bamboo kites were made initially to measure distances for the military, to record and calculate wind readings and also to provide communication from far away, a bit like ships with flags. Later, the art of kite-making and their ornamental elements became an important part of rituals and pleasure all over the world.
We were hosted in the studio of Maria Blaisse, who gave an introduction to her practice and her intuitive playful, and exploratory approach to material, including many years devoted to research into bamboo. We were then lead by artists, Limo Hair and Sophie de Serière, who have been researching and making their own kites inspired by these traditional techniques and using scavenged and leftover materials.
