Weaving & baking: entangled routines – Suzanne Bernhardt, Sasha van Aalst
Saturday 22nd June 2024
Location: Fruittuin van West
Weaving & baking: entangled routines was a gathering around the origin of our bread. Together with Sasha van Aalst and Suzanne Bernhardt, participants followed sweetgrasses and explored how this plant family shapes movements, routines, and gestures.
As a baker, Sasha guided the group through the rhythms of bread — gestures in close collaboration with the microbes that help transform the dough, making it easier to digest and more tasty. In between folding the dough, Suzanne invited participants to trace the roots of the grass family by weaving together wild and domesticated grasses into a collective placemat.
With this workshop, the close relations between plants, humans, and microbes were honoured through practising slow routines of preparing and caring for food. These routines were celebrated by festively sharing the fresh fire-baked breads on top of the woven placemats.
